Before Final Jurry; The concept of change

Given:
2 basal elements, will be determined by designer and at least 4 transformations of them in total (must in clude both bending and folding)
Sticks
volume of 65.000 cm^3

The concept of Hierarchy is used here. Two big C groups have a hierarchical relations with A, B and B' respectively. I couldn't use the sticks effectively.

The Jurry Project

Given:
Design planar elements must be minimum 89.
Includes black, white and atleast two tones of grey.
Design should have key concepts, order, dominance, hierarchy etc.

I tried to make a contrast of voids with 45 degreed ones and the other ordinals. Some of my groups had common elements while being connected. I used a tone of gray to show that. Black voids are the contrasting ones and the other two tones for the general sizes of voids of the intermediate groups

Before Jurry

Given:
Design planar elements must be minimum 89.
Includes black, white and atleast two tones of grey.
Design should have key concepts, order, dominance, hierarchy etc.

I made this model for the critic to understand more of void concept. Altough I was lacking order and grouping this helped me a lot.

Exercise 6c Concept of Hierarchy

Given:
A minimum number of 67 2D elements which shuold include square, rectangle and isosceles right triangles.
The smallest unit of the measuring system should be 2,5 cm
Design should occupy a volume of approximately 27000cm3

After and big fat FD I understood what I wasn't suppose to do more. Main idea here is a single initial group is rotating while in every rotation gradually extending It's number of elements.
We were asked improve the model later and here it is the improved version.

Exercise 5c

Given:
11 square elements
19 rectangle elements
23 isosceles right triangles
The smallest unit of the measuring system should be 2,5 cm.

I tried to make an order in the laterals of the design and aother one in the center. In Lateral side elements starts being long rectengles and gradually shortens till it become a little square close to the center. In center, there is again this gradual changing but this time it is only size of a square.

New element: Parallelograms

A lot was said about the angles in perivious critics, that's why I tried to use that much diffrent angles.
Unfortunatelly, The angles were nt in an order and the design was lineer.

Exercise 4

Given:
5 planar elements of 9x9
9 planar elements of 6x9
11 isosceles right triangles with sides length 9cm

I didn't really had trouble  with the triangles in this work becouse I had no idea what their potencial was. I was trying to make more compact and stable design with groups only. After critics I realized I must respetect all of the elements.

Exercise 2

Given: 9x9 and 11 6x12  planar elements

I was grouping the elements but wasn't really thinking about the stability still. The work was falling apart while carriying.

Exercise 1

Given: 9 planar elements of 9x9 squares

I was trying to group the number and connect the groups with each other.
The structure was not stable since the design wan't compact and the slits are only on one element where 2 elements are connecting.

Junk Design

Given: Scrap Materials

I was asked to make a 3D abstract organization
I had no idea what they ment by abstrack and organization. I understood thet had nothing to do with what I made  after the critics.

Rhythm in Design

There are two parallel rhythmic sequences in this 2D design work, union of white lines and planes and union of gray circles. The designer used colors of white, grayand black which lets us distinguish the distinction of the two parallel rhythms.
The first one to observe, since the lines and planars are in bright white color, is the white-black sequence. There is a gradually changing rhythms that lines and squares make by spreading from left down corner to right and top. Moving from corner left to right and top, the wide of white and black elements are extending while the length of them both are getting shorter. The designer uses a following order of white and black and altering it with the gradual change. The second one is made with the gray circles. Elements from center to external is rotating around the central orbit while their sizes are gradually extending. We can feel a parallel diagonal movement in both of these rhythms which allow them to dwell together.

Hierarchy in Design

Within the first look to the painting, the trees in the left draws our attension. The trees differ from the main tone of the upper painting in terms of color, shape and  placement. We can easily say the trees have a great visual weight and have a strong influence in painting thus, they are in a very high level of hierarchic order in this painting. Then, the start-like shapes in the sky are shaping most of the painting. in the middle of the sky, the continous wind orders the others the small starts around it, which makes the wind dominant in the sky. There is also color contrasts of yellow, blue and white there. With its bright yellow color, the star -mabye the moon- in the corner top-right have a big visual weight also. Since those three objects, respectively; trees, wind blow and bright star have a diagonal contunuation in the painting the hierarchical order of them leads our attension throught the painting. While going down of the painting we see another contrast of mountains -white,blue and black- which distinguishes the borders of the sky and the village. We see the sharp tower of the church in the village which might be a reflection of big trees. This relation ship with the higher level of hierarchical element made the church more noticable than the others and also carries it to the following hierarchical level.

Dominance and Contrast in Design

Design 1:
At the first look we see the women face in the middle of this design work. It can be explained with the face's being the biggest element in the design and being in the center. Also it has the white color whereas  the rest of the design has darker texures or black color. This contrast of texture and color and the face's attractive larger shape makes it the dominant object in the design. We can also see the good continuation of the other elements moving throught the circle's borders. Since most of the design work is darker textured, we can consider these continuing white elements as the sub-dominants. They are second to be seen after the dominant and leading us inside of the desing and letting us notice the sub-ordinates, which are the darker textured floathing elements. In checked textured elements there is an other interesting example of contrast. Not being as strong as the white side elements, by using figure/ground organisation they are also helping us to notice the sub-ordinates, so we can give them a roll between sub-dominant and sub-ordinate.

Design 2:
In this design work, the designer used color contrast to distinguish the units. Using the lighter and darker tones in an order gives the design a three dimensional debt. Having brighter tones in the upper side of the page shows that the light comes from somewhere above the page.
Using of bright red and white near dark toned subtractive cube in the middle pretends as a "white spaces" and gives the cube the heaviest visual weight in the design. The darker gray-black prisims on the top also helped this contrast to be stronger. What makes the contrast between the cube and prisims is aproximity of diffrent leveled prisms having a strong density of white tone on their top. Using dark blue tones with the brighther red tones makes blue more perceivable and attension drawer so that the bottom part of the design survives from being insignificant. Also in the back ground, there is a fact of getting darker colored while moving downwords. This also creates a contrast and balance in general of the design.
